Personal work....smallville

smallville by Brook Pifer

Small Town from Brook Pifer on Vimeo.

I grew up in a small town in Western Pennsylvania. Fortunately my career allows me the opportunity to travel but I have yet to discover a place as charming and quirky as the areas located within Mercer County. The more I think about my roots the more I realize how out of touch much of America is with small town life. Once a thriving economy thanks to steel mill plants, Mercer County has undergone many changes. But the silver lining behind it all remains, core mom and pop attractions are still able to thrive thanks to their unique offerings. My hope is this book will inspire you to take a vacation that is a bit off the beaten path.

You can buy this book on blurb.

SPECIAL THANKS:
I'd like to give a very warm thank you to Laura at Tara, Connie at Daffin's and Peggy at The Winner. Without your willingness and hospitality this book would not be possible. Thank you for sharing. And Connie, thanks for the amazing chocolate!

FYI:
When I have some down time (is there such a thing), I'm going to put up some video footage I filmed while working on this project. You just have to see some of these places in action, especially the feeding of the fish.

Hello Brooke,

Long time. I checked out the preview of your book. Less Sharon Steel, Linesville and what I think is/was the drive in theater in Transfer the remainder of the pages were blank on my end. I get back to the area from time-to-time, but I think it changes a lot each time I'm back. A transition from ma ‘n pa establishments towards corporate “sterilization” seems to be a trend on each visit – which isn’t necessarily bad. My sole remaining must-haves are the Corral (seasonal) and Luigi's Pizzeria.

That said, I browsed your blog and happy to see you are doing well.

We’ve been living a few blocks away from the San Francisco Giants’ Stadium for the last eight years, so maybe my perspective isn’t the same as yours. Love to buy a hardcopy of the book if it is available.

All the best,
Michael Chovan

This looks great! The accompanying video is great as well! I grew up in PA as well, but further east in Hershey. I traveled around PA a lot, so this is really neat to see! Good job!

There is something to be said for small town, USA. You did a fabulous job capturing the everyday things that the locals may take for granted. The video brought a smile to my face and I can't wait to hit Daffin's next month. Thanks for reminding me of the simple things.
